Overview of Council Procedures

The Town Council has fifteen directly elected members who represent 5 Wards in the town and who usually serve for four years. Town Council elections are held in May every 4 years. Each year, the Council members elect a Town Mayor and a Deputy Mayor and both play a full part in civic, social and charitable activities in the Town. The Town Council and its committees meet regularly. The meetings have always been open to the public to observe, but now, in the true spirit of open government, any resident is able to speak on agenda items, provided the required notice is given to the Town Clerk.

Under the new ethical framework introduced by the Localism Act 2011, every District, Town and Parish Council is required to publish District, Town and Parish Councillors' Declaration of Pecuniary Interest online.
