Job description
Here at Broadstairs and St Peter’s Town Council, we are looking for a new staff member to join our team as a Gardener/Grounds Person(s) to start asap at 30 hours per week. Our licence is currently for 3 years, so this position is fixed term for 3 years.
Summary of the role
The postholder will be working ‘hands-on’ with a small team of gardeners. As an integral part of the Grounds Maintenance Team, the postholder will have a passion and knowledge of gardening organically and to enhance biodiversity. The post holder will also be expected to operate the required tools and machinery, check the health of plants by identifying pests and/or diseases, strimming, mulching, weeding, shrub pruning and general gardening.
Specific Duties:
· Ensure that the gardens and grounds are maintained in the most environmentally responsible way using organic methods and products wherever possible.
· Maintain the weekly, monthly, seasonal, and annual schedule of work for the gardens and grounds in line with the TDC licence and agreed management plan.
· Provide monthly updates.
· Grass cutting using the appropriate machinery, ensuring clearance of grass cuttings.
· Hedge trimming using small tools.
· Minor ground tree work (non-climbing) such as removal of epicormic growth.
· Weeding, planting, plant/shrub maintenance and pest control– using recognised horticultural practice (organic) and COSHH regulations.
· Litter picking/leaf clearance.
· Carry out routine checks and basic care and maintenance to tools and equipment.
General Duties and Responsibilities:
1. To undertake mandatory training based on individual and service needs.
2. Complete paperwork as required – work records etc.
3. To promote a positive, inclusive ethos that challenges discrimination & promotes equality & diversity.
4. Exercise skills in customer care when dealing and communicating with members of the public.
5. To comply with Town Council’s policies and guidelines in respect to health & safety including wearing correct PPE and clothing. (PPE will be supplied.)
6. To be able to work alone and also as part of a team.
7. To demonstrate positive personal and professional behaviour.
8. To meet minimum relevant occupational standards.
9. To keep up to date with the skills required to fulfil the role. (Training will be available/ provided.)
10. To undertake any other duties requested by the Council..
Qualifications
- Proven experience in gardening and horticulture, with a strong understanding of plant growth and care.
- Proficient in using hand tools and power tools for effective landscape maintenance.
- Strong customer care skills.
- Background in groundskeeping and landscape maintenance, ensuring well-kept outdoor environments.
Job Types: Part-time, Fixed term contract
Pay: Up to £25,584.00 per year
