Local Heritage Assets

Broadstairs & St Peter’s Town Council is proud of the town’s rich architectural heritage and is actively involved in protecting it.  This is achieved in several ways at national and local level by identifying geographical areas and individual buildings.

The 2nd Edition of the Broadstairs & St Peter’s Neighbourhood Development Plan gives details about how this important aspect of the town’s history is protected:

There are four Conservation Areas in Broadstairs & St Peter’s and these are:

  • Central Broadstairs Conservation Area
  • St Peter’s Conservation Area
  • Reading Street Conservation Area
  • Kingsgate Conservation Area

More information about the Conservation Areas can be found at 9.3.1 of the Neighbourhood Development Plan.

In addition to the Conservation Areas, there are five Areas of High Townscape Value and these are:

  • Callis Court Road
  • Kingsgate Avenue
  • North Foreland
  • Park Avenue
  • South Cliff Parade & Western Esplanade

More information about the Areas of High Townscape Value can be found at 9.3.2 of the Neighbourhood Development Plan.

The town has 137 buildings which Historic England has assessed as Grade II Listed, including one Grade II*.  These range from the beautiful 11th Century Parish Church of St Peter the Apostle to the elegant 20th Century war memorials.  They also include impressive 18th Century follies, cottages linked to the history of smuggling and buildings associated with Charles Dickens.  The register of these buildings was updated in 2026 by members of the Broadstairs Society and can be found at Pierremont Hall on request, and soon to be available here on the Town Council website.

There are also a further 113 buildings which are considered to be Local Heritage Assets.

More information about the Local Heritage Assets can be found at 9.3.4 of the Neighbourhood Development Plan.

All these areas and buildings form a very important part of the historic character of Broadstairs & St Peter’s.
