Culmers Update – Blooming fantastic! August 2025

You may have seen at the start of the year Culmers Amenity Land was planted with a new wildflower meadow that was sadly vandalised. We then reseeded a second time and were hit with an extremely dry spring coupled with some other set backs, the meadow failed again!

Reseed number 3-

Town Council Officer Abi who is leading on this project then reached out to the lovely volunteers at Culmers Allotments to agree a watering schedule and use of their water supply for the first few weeks of replanting, and 3rd time certainly was the charm, how fantastic does Culmers look now?!

The meadow is now full of Corn flowers, Poppies, Oxeye Daisies, Musk Mallow, Sainfoin, Corn Cockle, Borage, just to name a few!

In season-

In the surrounding bushes and trees you may also find wild blackberries, elderberries and sloe berries all adding to the biodiversity of the area and food for local wildlife.

If you have a spare half an hour or even 10 mins we highly recommend putting your phone down, sitting on one of the benches and enjoying the surrounding nature. From birds, seasonal fruit to insects. It’s a little pocket of peace in our busy town.

Big thank you to the volunteers at Culmers allotments for their help and support, The Mayor and Mayoress for funding the reseed and helping to ready the ground. Contractors Box Green NJL and Abi for working hard on one of the hottest days of the year to de-weed and reseed the ground and lastly Operations Officer Paul for watering daily in the early stages too!

We can’t wait for the next stage of this rewilding project!
