Council Overview |
This section provides a brief introduction to Broadstairs & St Peter's Town Council and its role in the community.
Quality Status
In December 2006 Broadstairs & St. Peter’s Town Council was awarded Quality Status. The award is an acknowledgement that the Town Council is performing above national minimum standards.
Being a “Quality” Town Council, Broadstairs & St. Peter’s is in a better position to influence decision making processes and/or take on additional services and areas of responsibility from Thanet District Council or Kent County Council.
Overview of Council Procedures The Town Council has fifteen directly elected members who represent 5 Wards in the town and who usually serve for four years. Town Council elections are held in May every 4 years. Each year the Council members elect a Town Mayor and a Deputy Mayor and both play a full part in civic, social and charitable activities in the Town. The Town Council and its committees meet regularly. The meetings have always been open to the public to observe, but now, in the true spirit of open government, any resident is able to speak on agenda items, provided the required notice is given to the Town Clerk.
The Committees There are two main committees - Finance & General Purposes, and Planning, which appoint Sub-Committees as and when needed. There are also Advisory Committees which report to Finance & General Purposes. |
