Neighbourhood Planning gives communities the power to make their own plans for their area

A Neighbourhood Plan is a community-led framework for guiding the future development and growth of an area. It may contain vision, aims, planning policies, proposals for improving the area or providing new facilities, or allocation of key sites for specific kinds of development. It may deal with a wide range of issues (like housing, employment, heritage and transport) or it may focus on one or two issues that are of particular importance in a local area.

In June 2015, Thanet District Council designated the area for Broadstairs and St. Peter's Neighbourhood Plan as all of the Parish of Broadstairs and St. Peter's.

Set out below is our progress as at February 2017

Stage 1: Getting Started: COMPLETED

Thanet District Council's cabinet designated the area for the Broadstairs and St Peter's Neighbourhood Plan in June 2015.

Stage 2: Evidence Base: ALMOST COMPLETE

Questionnaire: A resident questionnaire was undertaken in early 2015, which was used to gauge the views of the residents of the town and ideas for the town moving forward.

Housing Need Surveys: Work was undertaken in the latter part of 2015 and early 2016 to ascertain any housing need or requirement the town might have, and whether this could be addressed in the Local Plan.

Significant Route and Views: As part of the preparation for a draft plan, significant routes throughout the town were walked and identified in August and early September 2016. This piece of work is currently in the process of being drafted into a background document ready to support our Neighbourhood Plan.

Design Statement: The existing Design Statement (2011) will undergo a review during 2017 to bring it up-to-date and current.

Stage 3: Plan Drafting: GETTING STARTED in 2017

As part of the final plan and Issues and Options Paper will be produced before the summer 2017 and the final draft Neighbourhood Plan before the end of the year. Watch this space for future consultation dates.

Meetings are held in public, so any Broadstairs and St. Peter's person is welcome to attend as an observer. If a member of the community can make a positive contribution and is able to commit to come to most meetings, or for a period of time while a topic that is of special interest is discussed, he or she can be put forward to join the group as a community member (the group is made up of Councillors and community members, and both types of member have equal voting rights).
